How have the collective historical experiences of Modern Hellenism left their imprint on the realms of literature and the visual arts, and what key themes or narratives do these artistic expressions reveal? When examining the impact of diasporas, migrations, and forced population movements, what historiographical interpretations and approaches have been employed to shed light on the evolving identity of Modern Hellenism, and how have these interpretations shaped our understanding of the Greek diasporic experience? In the context of the history of the Greek book and printing, how have printed materials contributed to the multiple expressions and representations of Modern Hellenism, particularly in relation to religion, language, and cultural identity, and what role has the written word played in preserving and shaping this cultural heritage? These and similar thematic categories were the focal point of the 7th European Congress of Modern Greek Studies. In a fruitful and stimulating event, more than 250 junior and senior academics from diverse disciplines and across the globe discussed new approaches and undercurrents in a vibrant academic field. The participation of scholars from various institutions, such as schools, museums, memorials, universities, and culture administration offices, who engaged in lively discussions for four days, further highlighted the congress’s interdisciplinarity.

The congress began with cordial welcome words and remarks from the Vice-Rector of the University of Vienna, MANUELA BACCARINI (Vienna), the Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Historical and Cultural Studies of the University of Vienna, GERALD MOERS (Vienna), and the Vice-Chair of the Department of Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies ANDREAS E. MÜLLER (Vienna). The president of the European Society of Modern Greek Studies, Professor VASSILIS SABATAKAKIS (Lund), outlined the great significance of the European Congresses for the field of Modern Greek Studies. Professor MARIA A. STASSINOPOULOU (Vienna) of the University of Vienna and the Austrian Society of Modern Greek Studies explained in her speech that the long research tradition of Vienna about the long commercial, literary, and printing presence of Greeks in the city inspired the particular focus of the 7th European Congress of Modern Greek Studies on Early Modernity. Six parallel panels followed the festive opening of the congress, and each focused on a specific thematic category, running for four consecutive days.

Panel 1 examined themes that varied geographically and chronologically, ranging from the USA to Georgia and from Czechoslovakia to Tanganika, from the early 18th century until the 1950s. Moreover, the panelists approached their subjects through various methodologies emanating from diverse fields, such as literary studies, urban planning, history, and didactics. This wide scope of backgrounds and approaches allowed for a comprehensive examination of the common thread that connected the topics, bringing together well-established and junior scholars. Despite this wide diversity of perspectives, the conjunctures of the multiple aspects entailed in the topic of migrations and forced population movements produced a flowing and ongoing “discussion” from panel to panel and among all participants. The alternation in the roles of panel participants and audience that occurred in the panels dealing with similar subjects is the point in case, as it demonstrates, on the one hand, the very thoughtful arrangement of the panels and, on the other hand, the understanding of the organizers with regards to the current discussion in the diverse fields present in the conference.

The second panel moved from various media of heritage (material culture, visual arts, texts, performance) to poetry, prose, and digital texts engaging with Modern Hellenism. Speakers reflected on past and present archaeology, architecture, and the fine arts as surfaces of cultural representation, as well as digital writing and publishing. Dance, music, and theater studies dealt with performative concepts of culture. All this created an abundant interdisciplinary dialogue that combined material, textual, and metaphysical categories by means of El Greco’s paintings, Giorgos Seferis’ poems, oral tradition, political imagery in private houses, street names in historical combat territories, antiquities museums, ancient music and dance on modern stages, the commemorative character of film, television, and built monuments, or poetic experiments on social media. With its presentations and the discussions concluding each session, the panel series stood out for its interdisciplinary character. For example, a paper dealing with propagandistic film received a response on costume authenticity from a material expert, while literary scholars gave feedback on an experimental cinematic reading of Seferis’ poetry. Overall, the panel series pointed out that “zooming in” does not impede a wider angle and understanding. Quite the opposite, the methods, and subjects that proposed their respective concepts of Modern Hellenism, discussed its representation forms and addressed the multidimensional appearance of heritage provided the most interesting conditions for discussion.

The third panel covered the period to the foundation of the Greek state with some extensions to the later 19th century. Panels focused on early modern Greek church history and religious thought with presentations on figures such as Kyrillos Loukaris and Evgenios Voulgaris. The printing of related books during these centuries was discussed in presentations about the involvement of diaspora communities in this process. Several papers addressed textual representations of the Greek War of Independence and philhellenism, such as memoirs, others discussed the afterlife of this event as depicted for instance in 20th century drama or the dress of the independence fighters in monumental sculptures. A range of contributions showed the broad space of early modern Hellenism, from Greek students in Italy over travel and geographic descriptions of territories inhabited by Greeks to women’s fashion in Venetian Crete and the Venetian administration of the Ionian Islands. Substantial emphasis was placed on Fanariotic literature and culture in Moldavia and Walachia and in Constantinople, the literature of the Cretan Renaissance, and the reception of Byzantine texts in modern Greek literature (e.g. Digenis Akritas).

The fourth panel discussed a wide variety of contemporary literary genres - poetry, novels, short stories, diaries, literature for children and young adults – in a chronological spectrum spanning from the late 18th to the 21st century. Despite the wide variety of topics, the transcultural and interdisciplinary perspective proved that the study of modern Greek literature is in pace with dominant trends in the humanities today. The panelists drew from the methodological tools of comparative literature, reception, and cultural studies to examine transfers and translations across borders. Translation was discussed as a linguistic, literary, editorial endeavor, and a particular focus was placed on translation processes during the Cold War. Moreover, literature was discussed in conjunction with music and film and other discourses such as religion, historiography, philosophy, biopolitics, and ecology. What is especially noteworthy is the prominence of comparative approaches that break the hierarchical relation between Modern Greek literature and the Western European canon and trace literary and cultural connections and tensions between Greece, Georgia, Latvia, and the Balkans. Besides bringing academic attention to less-known authors and texts, the conference elicited original contributions from canonical authors, like the internationally renowned figures of Nikos Kazantzakis and C.P. Cavafy. The panels organized around Cavafy allowed views to be heard that come from varied and sometimes diametrically opposed methodological perspectives, such as queer studies, continental philosophy, traditional close reading, and archival research. The panelists’ enthusiasm and the variety of topics and perspectives as well the interaction between translators and scholars of literary translation pointed towards the broad professional areas in which Modern Greek Studies thrive also outside academia in the narrow sense.

Panel 5 shifted focus to topics dealing with the Greek language’s synchrony, diachrony, and diatopy, as well as theoretical aspects of linguistics, literature, and translation studies. The issue of koineization and standardization process of Modern Greek was at the core of the discussion of the initial panel. It was examined both in conjunction with the Modern Greek Enlightenment and the early production of grammatical workbooks. Concerning comparative approaches, Greek was examined with respect to Balkan and other European languages. Some topics pertained to idiomatic speech and contrastive examination of certain grammatical categories. Minority Greek communities in Albania, Italy, and Ukraine, their dialects and education were at the center of discussion of several papers. At the same time, the Orientalist literary depiction of the Greek-Orthodox community in Istanbul was also thematized. A significant number of papers was dedicated to translation from Greek into several languages, in particular Chinese, Hungarian, Georgian, German, and Russian. The relevant papers presented many titles translated from Greek but also shed light on the intellectual needs that these translations satisfied. Texts and theater, literature and history, Greek as a foreign language instruction in Greece and beyond were additional issues addressed in the panels. Moreover, it is worth emphasizing that several presentations incorporated a digital component in their analysis, indicating the progress in the field. It is important to note that the congress not only offered a wide range of excellent talks but also allowed networking, exchange of ideas, and establishing future synergies.

The sixth panel further deepened discussions on historical and literary retrospectives in the 19th and 20th centuries. Particularly memorable were two sessions dealing with the history of health, encompassing topics such as public health, psychiatry, and the depiction of health in the press from the formation of the Greek state onwards. The contribution of the Greek- and foreign press, both through newspapers and magazines, as well as the projection of oral and written testimonies, highlighted further issues such as the portrayal of the Greek Revolution, the reception of Greeks in central European countries, the promotion of Greek art and the handling of memory during the Second World War and the occupation (1941-1944). The panel also placed emphasis on aspects of Cold War diplomacy, as it was reflected both through bilateral interstate relations and in the context of NATO, as well as through nuclear diplomacy, thus underlining new methodological and interdisciplinary approaches. Ultimately, participants in this panel addressed the question of how the impact of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974 can be depicted in theatre, literature, and historical narratives, especially when the memory is still fresh and many traumatized survivors of these tragic events are still alive.

Overall, it can be said that the 7th European Congress of Modern Greek Studies was characterized by exciting discussions and the up-to-date relevance of its topics. The final session included concluding remarks on behalf of the organizers and of the participants and the affirmation to open the field even more to interdisciplinarity and to search together with all other humanities for answer on the pressing issues, such as new AI tools in teaching, research, and translation. The stimulating presence of a high number of young scholars (30 of whom received scholarships from the EENS) with innovative ideas and their promise to meet again in the next congress in 2027 added to the positive and optimistic closure of the congress.
